Because the last decades have brought great changes in the infectious pathology, opportunistic microorganisms – especially fungi, being involved more and more frequently in infections of increasing gravity;
Because in Romania there is an obvious discrepancy between the rising trend of any kind of mycoses and the capacity to control them. Most clinical laboratories are still incapable of diagnosing a fungal infection until the initiation stage of a first intention etiotropic therapy;
Because the training of medical mycologists is made now and then and it is insufficiently organized; the fungal etiology of some illness is rarely suspected per primam;
Because the Romanian resources are extremely poor in clinical mycology studies so necessary to understand the augmentation tendency of mycotic diseases incidence in the general clinical context;
Because it is not known exactly the mycoses etiological spectrum which occur in patients from our region and there are not data concerning the antifungal susceptibility profile of implied strains;
And last but not least, because in medicine although we are used to illustrating everything through reports, statistics and percentages, we should not ignore the essential – the fact that behind these figures there is the human suffering whose comfort justifies any effort.
Objectives
Spread of medical mycology and mycotoxicology knowledge in medicine and pharmacy fields;
Continuous training of medical specialists in order to improve the diagnostic and therapy performances against fungal-dependent diseases;
Promotion of an interdisciplinary approach in the management of patients with high risk for fungal infections;
Set up of the first national reference center for mycology and antifungals;
Establishing of national standards for fungal infections diagnostic and therapy;
Affiliation to international similar societies to reach common global trends;
Awareness of people concerning the risk represented by fungi and their metabolites.
